The anatomy of a cosmetic formula

What actually goes into a serum, cream, cleanser, or shampoo — and why.

A cosmetic formula is not a list of nice ingredients mixed together. It is an engineered system that has to be stable in a warehouse, safe after being opened and touched daily for months, pleasant to use, and consistent from batch to batch. Nearly every ingredient on a label is doing one of a small number of jobs.

The base

Most cosmetic products are mostly water, mostly oil, or a structured mixture of both. The base determines the fundamental character of the product and, importantly, its microbial risk. Water-containing products can support microbial growth; anhydrous products largely cannot.

The structure system

Thickeners and polymers give a product its body — whether it pours, spreads, holds a peak, or forms a gel. This system is responsible for a large share of how a product feels, which is a large share of whether someone keeps using it.

The emulsification system

If a product contains both oil and water, something has to hold them together. Emulsifiers reduce the tension at the boundary between the two phases and stabilise the dispersion. Emulsion stability is a long-term property: a formula can look fine on day one and separate at month six.

The preservation system

Any product containing water needs a preservation strategy, supported by packaging choices and often by chelating agents that improve preservative performance. This system exists for safety, not for shelf life alone.

The performance system

Finally there are the ingredients the product is designed around — surfactants in a cleanser, conditioning agents in a conditioner, humectants and other functional materials in a moisturiser or serum. These are usually the ingredients on the front of the package, and usually a minority of the formula by weight.

Why formulation takes time

These systems interact. Raising the level of an oil phase changes the emulsifier requirement. Changing pH affects both preservation and the stability of certain ingredients. Switching a thickener changes feel and can change how evenly other materials disperse. A formula is a set of compromises resolved in a specific order, then tested to confirm the compromise holds.
