Step one: define the job

Before any ingredient is chosen, the brief has to be specific: what the product is for, what it should feel like, where in a routine it sits, and what it must not do. A vague brief produces a formula that satisfies no one.

Step two: solubility

A serum is largely water. Whatever the formula is built around must dissolve in that system and stay dissolved across the temperature range the product will encounter. Many otherwise attractive materials fail here first, and no amount of later adjustment rescues them.

Step three: pH

pH is not a free choice. It is constrained by ingredient stability, by skin compatibility, and by preservation. Setting it too early locks in problems; setting it too late means reworking the formula. Most serum development spends real time here.

Step four: texture

Thickening a serum is a sensory decision with technical consequences. Polymers add body, but they also affect how other materials disperse, how the product spreads, and whether it pills under a subsequent layer.

Step five: preservation and packaging

A water-based product needs a preservation system suited to its pH and composition, supported by packaging that limits contamination and protects sensitive materials from air and light. These are designed for from the beginning even though they are finalised late.

Step six: prove it holds

A formula that works on the bench is a candidate, not a product. Stability under storage conditions, preservative efficacy, packaging compatibility, and batch-to-batch reproducibility all have to be demonstrated before it becomes something you can buy.
