Ingredient stability

Many cosmetic ingredients are only stable, or only present in a usable form, within a particular pH range. Outside it, they may degrade over time even though nothing looks different in the bottle.

Preservation

Preservative systems perform differently at different pH values. A preservative that is effective at one pH may be substantially less so at another, which is why preservation and pH are decided together rather than in sequence.

Texture

Some thickening polymers only build viscosity within a defined pH window. Adjusting pH late in development can therefore change the texture of the product, not just its chemistry.
