How cleansers work

Oil and water do not mix, which is a problem when the material you want to remove is oily and the only practical solvent is water. Surfactants solve it.

The mechanism

A surfactant molecule has two ends with opposite preferences: one is attracted to water, the other to oil. In water, these molecules gather at surfaces and, above a certain concentration, cluster into small assemblies with the oil-loving ends turned inward. Oily material gets taken up into those assemblies and rinsed away with the water.

Why cleansing is a trade-off

A surfactant cannot tell the difference between the oil you want gone and the lipids that belong to the skin surface. Any cleanser that removes one removes some of the other. The tight, squeaky feeling after washing is the sensory signature of having removed more than necessary.

What makes a cleanser gentler

  • The choice of surfactants and how aggressive each one is.
  • Blending surfactants, which often reduces irritation relative to a single harsh one.
  • Total surfactant level — more is not better once the product cleans adequately.
  • Added conditioning and humectant ingredients that improve the after-feel.
